Retinoic acid (RA), also called vitamin A acid,  tretinoin, is a natural acidic metabolite of vitamin A produced by the body. It plays a critical role in normal development, growth and differentiation of cells by modulating the expression of target genes.

It affects the growth of bones and the metabolism of the epithelium (outer skin).

Commercial preparation in cream is being used as keratolytic agent for treating psoriasis,  acne vulgaris, wrinkles, dark spots, or rough skin on the face caused by long term exposure to the sun.
