The essential oil of xiang ma possesses antifungal effect (like Venezuelan Streptomyces kitasatoensis) There are reports that the leaves and roots contain an insulin like substance that possesses hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects. This insulin like substance is grey white powder, non flagrant, slightly bitter, non-alkaloid, non-glucoside, non-tannin. Its insulin value is 1 gram equals to 440 units (oral), or 880 units (hypodermic injection). Citronellal and geraniol possess fragrant smell and can be used as spices but are not known to possess any medical uses. Citral possesses anti-cancer effect.

Headache due to cold: fresh xiang mao 40 grams boiled with water and taken orally. Bruises and hematoma: 40-60 grams of fresh xiang mao boiled with water and taken orally. |

Note: Fresh xiang mao (lemon grass) is not sold in Chinese herb stores but can be found in Vietnamese / Chinese market or East Indian market in America. Sometimes it can be found in Super Markets in California. It is sold in market places in South East Asia.
