Alzheimer's Disease and beta-amyloid (Abeta)

Light to moderate alcohol consumption is associated with S100beta  and amyloid beta level in healthy older adults. [2]

Elevated S100beta levels may indicate the presence of radiologically detectable blood brain barrier leakage.[4]

Using benzodiazepine drug may increase the chance of getting Alzheimer's disease. [5]

Using a steroid type of chemical to activates pregnane X receptor (PXR), the amount of beta-amyloid protein in the brain is reduced in the genetically modified mice expressing with human abeta. The activation of the PXR was found to increase the expression of a blood-brain barrier protein known as P-glycoprotein. This protein transports beta-amyloid out of the brain. [3]

The controlled lowering of systemic copper may achieve anti-amyloid effects if initiated early in the disease process. [6]
